Abstract

Dehydration is a common issue that frequently occurs during physical activity and can impair athletic performance, including among basketball athletes of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Tanjungpura (FK Untan). This condition may affect both training capacity and competitive achievement. This study aimed to evaluate the association between fluid intake and perceived fluid needs with hydration status among FK Untan basketball athletes. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 15 athletes as research participants. Data were collected through body weight measurements before and after training, questionnaires, and a 24-hour Estimated Food Record. Spearman’s correlation test revealed a strong positive association between fluid intake and hydration status (p = 0.001; r = 0.764). Conversely, perceived fluid needs showed no significant association with hydration status (p = 0.165). Based on these findings, it can be concluded that fluid intake plays an important role in determining athletes’ hydration status, whereas perceived fluid needs do not demonstrate a significant correlation with actual hydration conditionsTop of Form.
